Built from the ground up. Driven by passion.
Who We Are
Bobcat Racing is the Formula SAE team at Texas State University. As a student-led organization, we design, manufacture, and test a formula-style race car while gaining hands-on experience that extends far beyond the classroom.
As a growing program, every season is an opportunity to learn, improve, and build on the work of the teams before us. From CAD and manufacturing to vehicle dynamics, electronics, business, and project management, our members take ownership of every aspect of the car's development.
We are actively competing in Formula SAE and continue to expand our capabilities with each competition. Every challenge we overcome strengthens our team, refines our engineering process, and moves us closer to achieving our long-term goals.
Our mission is simple: develop better engineers, build faster race cars, and establish a lasting motorsports program at Texas State University.
How We Got Here
From a startup garage build to a returning Formula SAE program.
2017
Founded
Bobcat Racing was established at Texas State University by a small group of mechanical engineering students with one goal: build a Formula SAE race car. What began as an ambitious idea became the foundation for a program built on engineering, teamwork, and relentless determination.
2020
Paused
The COVID-19 pandemic brought progress to a halt. Limited shop access, remote learning, and canceled competitions forced the team to step away from building. Although development stopped, the vision of competing in Formula SAE never disappeared.
2021
Restarted
A new generation of Bobcats took on the challenge of rebuilding the team from the ground up. New members were recruited, sponsorships were re-established, and years of lost knowledge were rebuilt piece by piece. This marked the beginning of a new era for Bobcat Racing.
2026
Back on the Competition Stage
After years of rebuilding, Bobcat Racing returned to Formula SAE Michigan with its first competition-ready car in years. The team successfully passed chassis inspection, driver egress, tilt testing, and noise testing, demonstrating that the car met many of the competition's demanding technical standards.
Although an engine issue prevented the car from completing brake test and advancing to dynamic events, simply reaching competition and progressing through technical inspection was a milestone for the team. The experience validated years of hard work and provided invaluable lessons that will shape every car that follows.
For Bobcat Racing, 2026 was not the finish line. It was proof that the program is back.
2027
The Next Chapter
With the foundation rebuilt and competition experience behind us, Bobcat Racing is ready for its next leap forward. A graduating class is passing down years of knowledge, while a new generation of engineers is ready to push the team even further.
Every season builds on the last. Every car is better than the one before it. The future of Bobcat Racing is just getting started.
